# Google's AI Mode wants to book the appointment, not just find you

_Google can already call a salon for prices, book through three beauty and wellness platforms, and take payment for a hotel inside a chat. Part 7 of Beyond the Four Walls: why your Business Profile now matters more than your homepage._

For twenty years Google's job in local business was to send people to you. Someone searched "facial near me," Google showed ten options, and the person did the rest: clicked, compared, called, booked. You competed for the click.

Google is now doing the rest itself. Its AI Mode can check live availability at a salon, hand off to the booking platform and fill the slot. On request, it can phone a handful of businesses for prices and email the customer the quotes. In August it started letting people pay for a hotel room without leaving the chat. Each step moves a little more of the deciding away from your website and into Google's answer.

In [Part 1](/blog/your-next-customer-wont-visit-your-website) we said the customer is starting to send software instead of walking in. Of all the companies building that software, Google matters most to a gym, studio or med spa, because it already owns the moment someone looks for you. Here is what it has built so far, what is still a promise, and what you should change.

## What Google has actually shipped

Google announces a lot. Fewer things reach ordinary users on schedule. Here is the timeline from Google's posts and help pages, with the status of each step.

| Date | What Google did | Status |
|---|---|---|
| January 30, 2025 | Tested "Ask for Me," which uses AI to call nail salons and auto shops for prices and availability | Search Labs test |
| July 16, 2025 | Began rolling out business calling ("Have AI check pricing") to all Search users in the US | Live, US |
| November 17, 2025 | AI Mode books restaurants for everyone in the US, and beauty and wellness appointments through Booksy, Fresha and Vagaro | Appointments limited to US Search Labs users |
| January 11, 2026 | Announced the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard for agent checkout | Checkout for eligible US retailers |
| April 28, 2026 | Handed its Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) to the FIDO Alliance | Open standard, version 0.2 |
| May 19, 2026 | At I/O, said agentic booking would expand to local services, with Google calling businesses in categories like beauty and pet care, for everyone in the US "this summer" | Announced |
| August 27, 2026 | Hotel booking with Google Pay inside AI Mode, with ten launch partners | Rolling out, US |

Read the status column, because that is where the honesty lives. The November appointment booking was a Labs feature, meaning people had to opt in. At I/O in May, Google said the local services expansion would reach everyone in the US over the summer. As of this writing we could not find a Google post confirming that the broad rollout finished, so treat it as announced, likely partial, and moving.

## The reach is the point

Plenty of AI assistants can book things. What makes Google different is the number of people already standing in its doorway.

source: Alphabet earnings remarks, July 22, 2026, and Digiday's report of the July 23, 2025 call. Google has not published a newer AI Overviews number that we could find. These are Google's figures, counted by Google.
:::

Two cautions. First, a "monthly user" can mean someone who saw one AI answer once. Google counts these its own way, and the numbers are not audited the way revenue is. Second, Google has not said how many people use AI Mode to book anything. The reach is real. The booking volume is not published.

What we can say: on that July call, Pichai said Google is "now sending billions of clicks to websites every week through AI features in Search." Clicks still flow. But each new booking feature is designed to need fewer of them.

## How the booking actually works

There are two different things happening, and they reward different preparation.

**Booking through a platform.** When AI Mode books a beauty or wellness appointment, it does not read your website and fill in your form. Google's November post says it searches reservation platforms for real-time availability and links you to finish with the partner. It named three: Booksy, Fresha and Vagaro. Booksy's own announcement says the appointment lands "directly into the provider's calendar," with no extra commission. That is a vendor's description, but it matches how Google's older "Reserve with Google" program has always worked: Google reads availability from the scheduling software, not from you.

**Google calling you.** The second path is the phone. Google's Search help page describes it plainly: search for a hair salon, pet groomer or wellness center, tap to have AI check pricing, and Google calls several nearby providers and emails the quotes back. It takes about 30 minutes, it is open to signed-in adults in the US, and Google says it "will not create a booking." Google's Business Profile help page goes further and says that when a customer requests an appointment, "Google calls your business to book the appointment." Separately, TechCrunch reported on September 24 that Google is testing "Call for Me" in the Gemini app on Pixel 11 phones, which can wait on hold, move an appointment, or book a reservation. That one is a small paid experiment.

The front desk now takes two kinds of calls: the customer's, and the one Google makes for them.
:::

Put together: the customer asks Google, Google checks the platforms it can read and the phones it can dial, and whatever answers cleanly goes on the shortlist. Your homepage may never be opened.

## The rails underneath: UCP, AP2 and Chrome

Three more pieces explain where this is heading, even though none of them is aimed at a gym today.

- **Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).** Announced January 11, 2026, it is Google's open standard for how an agent and a store talk through checkout. Google built it with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, and more than 20 companies endorsed it, including Stripe, Visa, Mastercard and American Express. It powers buying inside AI Mode and the Gemini app for eligible US retailers, with the retailer staying the seller of record.
- **Agent Payments Protocol (AP2).** Google's standard for proving a person actually authorized an agent's payment. In April it handed AP2 to the FIDO Alliance, the group behind passkeys, and released version 0.2, which adds "Human Not Present" payments: an agent can pay later on instructions the person approved earlier.
- **Gemini in Chrome.** Chrome's auto browse feature lets Gemini click through websites for you. It is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US, came to Android this summer, and Google says it asks for confirmation before sensitive tasks like purchases. Google's Chrome team also said in May that Gemini in Chrome "will soon support" WebMCP, the proposed standard we covered in [Part 2](/blog/the-plumbing-nobody-explained).

Today these mostly serve shoppers buying products and travelers booking hotels. Restaurants were first to book for everyone, appointments are still partly in Labs, and hotels now take payment inside the chat. The direction is one way: find, book and pay without leaving Google.

## Your Business Profile is the new homepage

For a local business, the practical lesson is blunt. The assets that feed Google's answers are your Business Profile, your reviews, and your booking platform's connection to Google. Your website still matters, but it is now one input among several, and often not the first one read.

:::compare "What wins a Google click" "What wins a Google booking"
A strong homepage, good ad copy, a fast page and a clear button. The customer judges you after they arrive.
---
Accurate hours, services and prices on your Business Profile, recent reviews, a booking platform Google can read, and a phone that gets answered. The judging happens before anyone arrives.
:::

Then check which booking software you run. Google names its booking partners for AI Mode and keeps a separate partner list for Reserve with Google, and the two do not always match. Platforms common in fitness and med spa connect to Google in different ways, and those connections change. Ask your vendor directly whether AI Mode can see your live availability and complete a booking, and get the answer in writing.

Fresha's help center shows how fussy these connections are: to get Google's Book button, your business name and address on Fresha must "match exactly" your Business Profile, your services need real prices, and your team needs shifts scheduled within the next 30 days. Small mismatches like these can quietly cost you the booking.

Finally, know the setting you probably never opened. In your Business Profile, under Advanced settings, there is a section called "Google automated calls and text messages." It controls whether Google may call you for bookings and inquiries, to keep your profile current, and to post on your behalf. Google says it limits repeat calls and avoids late nights. Leave bookings and inquiries switched on unless you have a reason not to, and tell your front desk that a polite robot asking about prices is a customer, not a telemarketer.

:::takeaways "What to do before Google books for your customers"
- Audit your Business Profile like it is your homepage: hours, holiday hours, every service with a price, categories, photos.
- Ask your booking platform, in writing, whether it is connected to Google's booking and to AI Mode, and what you must set up.
- Make names and addresses match exactly across Google, your booking software and your site, for every location.
- Check Advanced settings and keep "Bookings and inquiries from customers" on, then brief your front desk on Google's calls.
- Keep reviews fresh and answer them. They are part of what the answer reads.
- Make your website say the same thing as your profile, in plain text an agent can read.
:::

## Next: the browser itself

Google is turning search into an assistant. The browser is going the same way, and it can act on websites that no booking platform connects to. In Part 8, [the browser is becoming the assistant](/blog/the-browser-is-becoming-the-assistant), we look at Chrome, and the other browsers that now click, fill and book for their users.
