# Meta wants its AI to answer your leads. Whose rules will it follow?

_Meta is automating both ends of local marketing: machines that buy the ads and machines that answer the people who click them. Part 5 of Beyond the Four Walls: what that means for a gym, a studio or a med spa._

Picture a Tuesday night at a three-location med spa. Someone in your town scrolls Instagram, sees an ad for a lip filler special, and taps "Send message." The ad was chosen by Meta's software. The audience was chosen by Meta's software. And increasingly, the first reply that lands in that chat is written by Meta's software too.

Nobody on your team has touched the lead yet. The question for the owner is simple: what did the software just say about your price?

That is the story of Meta in 2026. It is automating both ends of local marketing at once: the machine that buys your ads and the machine that answers the people who click them. Each half makes sense on its own. Together they move a lot of decisions out of your building and into a system you rent.

## Half one: ads that buy themselves

In June 2025, The Wall Street Journal reported that Meta wanted to let brands fully create and target ads with AI by the end of 2026. As republished by Storyboard18, the plan was that an advertiser would supply a product image and a budget, and Meta's system would generate the images, video and copy and choose who sees them.

We are now in the last quarter of that deadline. On its earnings calls this year, Meta has not described a finished "image plus budget" product. What it has described is the pieces arriving, and the money moving through them.

On its October 2025 earnings call, Meta said the annual revenue run-rate going through its end-to-end AI ad tools had passed $60 billion. On July 29, 2026, CFO Susan Li put Advantage+ end-to-end solutions at "over $75 billion in annual revenue run-rate." The same call said more than 9 million small businesses now use at least one of Meta's AI creative tools, and that image generation adoption more than doubled in the quarter.

:::

For most local advertisers, this is not news. If you run Meta ads for a gym or a salon, you already let Advantage+ pick placements, audiences and budgets. The question was never whether to use automation. It was whether to trust what it optimizes for.

Here our own numbers are useful. Sneeze It graded 18,920 Meta ads for fitness, wellness, med spa and salon brands, $3.95 million in spend. Only 6.2% became winners, meaning Meta put real money behind them. And of the ads Meta backed hardest, only 47 out of every 100 brought in leads cheaper than their own account's average. Meta's favorite ad is often not your cheapest lead. [The full Creative Benchmarks write-up is here](/blog/what-18920-meta-ads-say-about-cost-per-lead).

That gap matters more as the system takes over more steps. When Meta writes the ad, picks the audience and sets the budget, the only check left is the one you run on the result.

## Half two: AI that answers the lead

The bigger change this year is on the other end of the click.

Meta has been testing what it called Business AIs inside WhatsApp and Messenger. In January, Meta said there were over 1 million weekly conversations between people and these AIs. By its April call, that was more than 10 million a week. On June 3, Meta rebranded the product as Meta Business Agent and opened it to "businesses of all sizes globally," including Instagram. Its own announcement lists what the agent can do, including "Book appointments and qualify incoming leads," and says owners decide when a person steps in.

The ads already point there. Meta's click-to-message ads open a chat instead of a form, and in January Meta said that revenue from them grew more than 50% year over year in the US. Put an agent behind those ads and you have a closed loop: Meta's system buys the attention, Meta's system answers the conversation, and Meta's system can book the visit.

The best case Meta has shared is Movida, a Brazilian car rental company with nearly 400 locations. On the July call, Meta said Movida's agent handled the whole booking flow on WhatsApp, from vehicle selection and pricing to payment, with daily WhatsApp bookings up 44% over the prior year and 85% of conversations resolved without a person. That is one company, reported by Meta. It is also exactly the shape of a multi-location fitness or spa brand.

Two agents, one counter. Meta is building the one that answers for you and the one that shops for your customer.
:::

## And a third agent, on the customer's side

On September 8, Meta launched Muse, a personal AI agent for consumers, rolling out in the US. Meta says it can do tasks, keep working after the app is closed, and check out through Link by Stripe, which issues a one-time card for each purchase. Meta also says Muse "checks with the person before sensitive actions like sending an email or making a purchase."

Then it got crowded. On September 21, Amazon blocked Muse from shopping on Amazon.com, saying Meta never told it the agent would access its store. Shopify announced Shop Pay checkout in Muse the same week, and PayPal announced a partnership on September 22. As of CNBC's October 3 explainer, Muse could pay through Link and Shop Pay, while PayPal had been announced but was not available yet. Several of the retail "connectors" Meta announced on September 23 were not active either.

:::pullquote
"Whoever owns the agent owns the relationship with the shopper, and every retailer knows it."

:::

There is also a version aimed at you. On September 29, Meta announced Muse for Small Business, with connectors to tools like HighLevel, QuickBooks, Shopify, Stripe and Meta ad accounts. It can analyze ad performance and draft a campaign, and Meta says "nothing publishes, sends, or spends without your approval." Notice what it does not claim: it does not say it answers your customers. That job belongs to the Business Agent.

So Meta is building all three seats at the table: the agent that buys your ads, the agent that answers your leads, and the agent your customer sends to shop. That is efficient. It also means that in a single conversation, both sides may be running on Meta.

## Whose rules does it follow?

For a gym or a med spa, the risk is not that the AI is rude. It is that it is confident about things only you should decide.

- **Price.** Your intro offer is $49 at two locations and $79 at the third. Does the agent know that, and does it know the $49 expired Sunday?
- **Offers.** A lead asks if the free week can be stacked with the referral discount. Who decided?
- **Medical lines.** A med spa agent should never promise results or answer whether a treatment is safe for someone. That is a person's call, every time.
- **Booking.** If the agent books inside Meta's chat, does that appointment land in your booking system, your CRM and your front desk's view of the day? Or in a thread nobody checks?

Meta's June announcement says its Business Agent Platform gives larger businesses "enterprise-grade controls, guardrails, and measurement" so they can "define rules." It does not spell out how a single studio sets those rules in the free version. Meta also said businesses will move to paid subscription offerings "in the coming months." Expect the controls and the price to keep changing.

:::compare "Meta's agent answers" "Your system answers"
Instant, around the clock, in the customer's language. Free to start today. It knows what you told it, and it lives where the customer already is. But the conversation, the booking and the data sit in Meta's apps first.
---
The reply follows your price sheet, your offer rules and your medical policy. The booking lands in your calendar and CRM, and your team sees it. But it is only fast if you make it fast.
:::

You do not have to pick one forever. Plenty of brands will use Meta's agent for first replies and hand off to their own system for anything with a price or a calendar attached. What you cannot do is let the default decide.

## What to do before Meta decides for you

:::steps
1. Time your own speed to lead
Send a message to your own ad, after hours, from a friend's phone. Write down how long the first reply takes and who sent it. That is your baseline.
2. Write the rule sheet
One page per location: current offers with end dates, prices, what can be stacked, and the questions that must go to a person. Any AI you turn on gets this page, and so does your front desk.
3. Keep the booking in your system
Whatever answers the chat, the appointment should land in the booking platform and CRM you already run. If it cannot, the agent should send a booking link, not book on its own.
4. Grade leads, not clicks
Check each winning ad against its account's average cost per lead, and then per booked appointment, not just Meta's reported results. In our data, more than half of Meta's favorites missed even the first bar.
:::

:::takeaways "For gyms, studios and med spas"
- Turn on Meta's Business Agent only after it has your written price and offer rules, and check what it says weekly.
- Send anything about results, safety or medical history to a person, every time.
- Make sure every booking, wherever it starts, ends up in your own calendar and CRM.
- Keep grading Meta's winning ads against your own cost per lead and per booking.
- Get ready for the customer's agent too: your offers, prices and booking page should be readable by software, not only by people.
:::

Agents that answer and agents that shop both lead back to the same place: a business an agent can understand and book. [Part 1 explains why that shift is already measurable](/blog/your-next-customer-wont-visit-your-website). Next, in Part 6, we look at the company that just slammed the door on Muse, and what it is building instead: [Amazon wants to buy it for you](/blog/amazon-wants-to-buy-it-for-you).
