ChatGPT is about to show picture ads. Most local businesses should wait.

OpenAI says it will test visual ads inside ChatGPT's image generation later in October, in the US, with a small first group of advertisers. Here is what is real, what is missing, and what a local business can do now.

People now ask ChatGPT to draw things for them. A kitchen remodel. A birthday cake. A haircut they are thinking about. Starting later this month, some of them will see an ad while they wait.

That is the news from OpenAI on October 5. It is a test, it is small, and it is US only. But it tells you where the next ad slot is coming from, and it is worth five minutes of your week.

What happened

OpenAI announced a new visual ad format that appears while ChatGPT is generating an image. As reported by BleepingComputer, OpenAI said: "Initially, we'll test this new ad format during image generation in ChatGPT." The ads could show product inspiration, how a product is used, or an experience tied to a service.

Here is what OpenAI and the trade press have said, and only that:

  • Timing. Testing starts "later this month," meaning October 2026, according to both BleepingComputer and TechCrunch.
  • Who. An initial group of advertisers, in the US only for now. No advertisers have been named.
  • Labels. OpenAI says the ads "will be clearly labeled, and remain separate from the image being created," as quoted by BleepingComputer. TechCrunch reports OpenAI also says ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers.
  • Measurement. BleepingComputer lists Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp for conversion data. TechCrunch lists a longer set of attribution and measurement partners.
  • Brand safety. DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science, which TechCrunch describes as brand suitability pilots still in development.
  • Reach. OpenAI says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people a week. TechCrunch notes ads would only reach that full audience once they roll out globally.

What nobody has published: pricing, a minimum budget, a general launch date, or a way for a small business to sign up.

What it means for your business

Think about the moment this ad appears. Someone has typed a picture of what they want. "A calm spa room with candles." "A backyard with a new deck." "A short bob for thick hair." That is intent you can see, in the customer's own words, before they ever search for a business.

For a remodeler, a salon or a med spa, that is a very good moment to be seen. Which is exactly why the big brands with measurement teams will get there first.

The new ad slot is the moment someone imagines what they want. The old one was the moment they searched for who sells it.

For now, though, this is not a channel a local business can buy. It is a test with a hand-picked group. There is no price. And the measurement partners listed are tools that larger advertisers use to connect ad views to sales. If you do not know your cost per booked appointment on Google and Meta today, a new channel will not fix that.

What is announced

A visual ad format during ChatGPT image generation. A US test starting later in October. Clear labels, kept separate from the image. Named partners for measurement and brand safety.

What is not

Pricing. A sign-up path for small businesses. A date for general availability. Any results from the test. Any detail on how ads will be targeted to a picture request.

OpenAI says the ad sits beside the picture, not inside it. The picture still belongs to the customer.

There is a second, quieter point. ChatGPT is becoming a place where people plan purchases, with or without ads. We wrote about that shift in Your next customer won't visit your website. Their assistant will. Being the business an assistant can describe accurately matters long before you ever pay for a slot there.

What to do this week

You do not need a ChatGPT ad budget. You need to be ready when one makes sense.

  1. Ask ChatGPT what it shows people like your customers

Type the picture requests your customers would type, like "a modern smile makeover" or "a cozy reading nook built in." Notice how much each request tells you about what that person wants to buy.

  2. Gather your best real photos

Visual ads run on images. Collect clear, recent photos of your work, your space and your results, with permission from anyone in them. You will use these on every platform anyway.

  3. Know your numbers on the channels you already run

Write down cost per lead and cost per booked appointment for Google and Meta. That is the bar any new channel has to beat.

  4. Set a reminder, not a budget

Check back in a month for pricing and a sign-up path. Until those exist, there is nothing to buy.
