The sale is moving into the chat. Here is what is live and what is a test.

TikTok announced one-click checkout from the For You feed, and Meta is testing checkout inside Messenger and Meta AI. None of it is a finished product yet. Here is what a business that sells online should do while it settles.

For years the path to a sale looked the same. Someone saw your ad, clicked, landed on your website, and paid there. Your website was the register.

This week, two of the biggest ad platforms said they want the register somewhere else: inside the feed, and inside the chat.

TikTok and Meta both made announcements at Advertising Week in New York. The headlines sound like everything changed. It did not, yet. Most of what was announced is being built or tested. Here is the plain version.

What happened

TikTok, October 5. In its newsroom post, TikTok said it "is building new Agentic Commerce shopping experiences," starting with Buy Direct and a Shopping Assistant. TikTok describes Buy Direct as an in-app checkout that lets people buy directly from a brand, from the For You feed, in one click, without leaving TikTok. Named partners include Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe. TikTok gave no launch date, no regions and no beta details.

Meta, October 6. Meta's Advertising Week post described two checkout tests:

  • "With Shopify, we're testing a direct checkout experience in Meta Business Agent on Messenger," so people can buy right after a brand's agent tells them about a product. That test is happening now.
  • "This fall, we'll begin testing a direct checkout experience with Adyen, PayPal, Shopify and Stripe in Meta AI," so businesses can sell products as they come up in conversation. That test has not started yet.

Meta framed the reason simply: people increasingly "ask, compare, and decide what to buy" inside Meta AI, Muse and Meta Business Agent.

Testing now

Meta: checkout inside Meta Business Agent on Messenger, with Shopify.

Announced, not started

TikTok: Buy Direct, being built, no date or regions. Meta: checkout inside Meta AI with Adyen, PayPal, Shopify and Stripe, testing to begin this fall.

None of this is generally available. If a sales rep tells you otherwise, ask them to show you the setting in your account.

What it means for your business

If you sell products, like a boutique, a supplement shop or a salon that sells retail, the direction is clear. The platforms want the whole purchase to happen where the ad is. Every extra click between the ad and the payment is a place where a buyer can wander off.

But look at what moves with the register.

When the sale happens in their app, the customer relationship starts in their app too.

When someone buys on your website, you get the email, the order history and the chance to welcome them properly. When they buy inside a feed or a chat, you depend on how much the platform passes back to you. Neither company has published those details for these new checkouts yet.

If you sell services, like a gym, a dental office or a plumber, this week's news is mostly about products. The same pattern is coming for bookings, though. Once someone can pay in the chat, booking in the chat is a short step. We looked at the payment side of this in Stripe is rebuilding checkout for robots.

The register is leaving the shop. The question for every owner is what comes back with each sale.

There is a good side. Shopify and Stripe are named in these announcements. If you already sell through one of them, you may be closer to these checkouts than you think.

What to do this week

  1. Find out which commerce tools you already use

Write down whether your online store runs on Shopify, Stripe, PayPal or something else. Those are the names in this week's announcements.

  2. Make your product details complete

Prices, sizes, availability and photos should be accurate in your store and your product catalog. Any checkout inside a feed or chat can only show what you give it.

  3. Decide what you need back from every sale

At minimum: the customer's email and permission to contact them. When these checkouts reach your account, check whether you get that before you turn them on.

  4. Watch, do not chase

Nothing here is generally available yet. Put a note in your calendar to check TikTok Shop and Meta Commerce Manager next month.
