Every week the platforms you advertise on change something. Most of it does not matter to you. Some of it starts tomorrow and costs you money if you miss it.

This is the short version of the week of October 5, 2026. Each story links to the full post: what happened, what it means for your business, and what to do about it.

The three that matter most this week

Google will start writing your website's deals into your ads. From October 12, Google Ads can find promotions on your website and attach them to Search and Performance Max ads that use location assets. Eligible accounts are opted in. If your site still shows last month's offer, your ad might too. Read: Google will write promotions into your ads

Shoppers plan to spend less this holiday, and they will be choosier. Circana surveyed 3,534 US consumers. Planned holiday spending averages $779, down from $796 last year, and 74% plan to cut back with deals, store brands and fewer extras. Read: shoppers plan to spend less this holiday

Know your break-even number before the holidays. Practitioners spotted a Google Ads calculator that turns your profit margin into the return you need from every ad dollar just to break even. Google has not announced it, but the math works anywhere: at a 15% margin, you need $6.67 back for every $1. Read: know your break-even ROAS before you spend

The buying is moving into the chat

Three of this week's stories are the same story told by different companies. The place where people find you, ask about you and pay you is moving inside other people's apps.

Live now

Google automated promotions, from October 12. Meta's Customer Lifecycle setting for all advertisers. Meta video ads made from your photos.

Still a test

ChatGPT picture ads, later in October. Meta checkout inside Messenger. Ads inside Google's AI Mode answers.

The question is no longer only where people find you. It is who is speaking for you when they do.

Two tools worth using this week

Stop paying Meta to find people who already buy from you. Meta's Customer Lifecycle setting is now open to every advertiser. It lets Meta treat new customers differently from existing ones. Read: stop paying Meta to find your own customers

Meta will turn your photos into video ads. No shoot required. Judge the result by what a lead costs, not by how it looks. Read: Meta turns your photos into video ads

One photo, many frames. The tools are getting cheaper. Your judgment is still the expensive part.

And one to watch

What people say about you in forums is reaching Google faster. Google described a program that lets approved forum and social platforms send fresh posts straight to Search. Read: forums reach Google faster than you do

What to do this week

  1. Decide on automated promotions before October 12

In Google Ads, open Assets, then account level automated assets, then advanced settings. Make sure your website's offers are current either way.

  2. Give Meta your customer list

So it can tell new customers from the ones you already have.

  3. Work out your break-even return

Use your real margin before you raise any holiday budget.

  4. Make one clear holiday offer

Shoppers are choosier this year. One offer beats five.

  5. Ask the machines about yourself

Search your business name in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, and read what they say.
